This thirteenth century castle was once a summer retreat and hunting lodge for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Archduke Franz Ferdinand d’Este, whose assassination in Sarajevo sparked World War I, had the castle modified to suit his needs at the end of the nineteenth century. Konopiste and its collections of historical weapons, period furniture, paintings and tapestries, offers an intriguing glimpse into royal life at the turn of the last century.
