Konopiste
Castle
This 13th Century
castle was a favorite summer getaway and hunting lodge for
the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Reconstructed at the end of the
19th century to serve the needs of Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este (whose
assassination in Sarajevo sparked Word War I), Konopiste houses collections of
historical weapons, period furniture, paintings and
tapestries. The tour offers a fascinating glimpse into the regular, day-to-day
royal life at the turn of the last century.
